What If the Old Versions of You Never Really Left? – Nicola Harris (Ep. 80)

Every Human Brand X-Ray starts with something that catches my attention.

With Nicola Harris, it was the way she talked about her past. She described one former version of herself as, “A version of me ten lifetimes ago.”

Ten lifetimes.

That’s a lot of distance to put between yourself and the person you used to be. So I listened a little closer.

This Week’s X-Ray

Nicola told me that much of her why today came from her own trauma. Yet whenever she talked about the woman who actually lived through those experiences, there was an enormous distance between them. The more she spoke, the more it sounded like she was telling me about somebody else’s life. Honestly, that fascinated me. Because Nicola was also trying to make sense of who she is today and where she’s going next.

As she talked, I started getting a very strange image in my head.

The Cupboard - I could see a cupboard. Inside were all these old versions of Nicola. The door was shut. There was a bloody great chain around it and they were banging on the other side trying to get her attention.

That’s what I told her.

Because every time Nicola tried to explain who she is today, we somehow found ourselves circling back to women she’d already decided belonged firmly in the past.

So I wanted to know why.

We followed that thread through the Human Brand X-Ray, and the conversation started going somewhere I don’t think either of us expected when we began.

I’m not going to tell you what was inside the cupboard. You’ll have to watch.

The Person Hiding in Plain Sight

This conversation made me think about how easily we can talk about an old version of ourselves as though we’ve finished with them.

The teenager.

The woman in the terrible relationship.

The person who made the decisions we’d never make now.

The person who survived something.

The person who had absolutely no bloody idea what they were doing.

Nicola had travelled a very long way from some of hers. Yet I kept wondering what those women might have to do with the Nicola sitting in front of me now.

That’s where her Human Brand X-Ray took us.
