Outgrowing A Label That Built Your Success - Sarah Barnes-Humphrey (Ep. 61)
What happens when the identity that made you successful is no longer the one you want to be known for?
Today on The Fairy BOSSmother Show, I met with Sarah Barnes-Humphrey, a media platform founder, best-selling author, and global voice in the supply chain industry. Sarah is widely known as “the supply chain girl,” but that identity is starting to feel too small for the direction she wants to grow into.
Can I redefine how Sarah positions herself so she expands beyond one industry while still holding onto the authority she’s already built?
Let’s meet Sarah Barnes-Humphrey.
If you want me to review your personal brand (deeper, in private, and without the cameras), you can book a Persona Brand Audit here.

See Sarah explore her other roles outside of the supply chain industry below.
Before the Fairy BOSSmother
Before the conversation began, Sarah had already achieved what many people are still working toward. She has visibility, reach, credibility, and a strong personal brand within her industry. Her work in supply chain was not accidental, as it is deeply connected to her family background, which gave her both access and understanding of the space from an early stage.
She didn’t just step into that world. She expanded within it, building a media presence that positioned her as a leader and someone capable of having difficult conversations about complex topics.
At the same time, that success came with a label that became widely associated with her: “the supply chain girl.”
That label built recognition, but it also created a boundary and once someone reaches a certain level, the question shifts from “How do I grow?” to “Do I still want to be known for this?”
During the show
As we spoke, it became clear that Sarah was not looking to walk away from what she had built. The authority, the experience, and the platform she created are valuable and still very much part of her story. The tension was in how she expands beyond it without losing what she has already established.
When someone becomes strongly associated with a specific industry, stepping outside of it can feel unclear, not because they lack ability, but because the path forward has not yet been defined.
Sarah is highly capable of leading conversations, particularly when those conversations involve complexity, nuance, and topics that require a level of confidence to address openly. That is not limited to supply chain.
Once we focused on that strength, the conversation shifted away from “What else can I do?” and toward “Where else does this apply?”
That is where the repositioning began to take shape.
After the show
By the end of the conversation, Sarah did not need to abandon her existing identity. Instead, she was able to see it as a foundation rather than a limitation.
The work she has done in supply chain is proof of her ability to lead, communicate, and hold space for conversations that matter. Those skills are transferable, and they can extend into areas that are already familiar enough for her to step into with confidence.
Expansion does not require starting over, but requires recognizing what you have already built and allowing it to evolve.
For Sarah, the next step is not about leaving one identity behind. It is about stepping into a broader one that gives her the room to grow without reducing what she has already accomplished.
