What it takes to lead public diplomacy today - Paul Lachelier (Ep. 49)
Today on The Fairy BOSSmother Show, I met with Paul Lachelier, founder of an educational nonprofit in Washington DC, working in soft power and public diplomacy.
Paul is doing important work in a fractured world. But the way he talks about it is so complex, the people who should be funding it aren’t hearing it. Paul could become the face of diplomacy if he implements the strategies discussed in this episode, and there’s no stopping him.
Can I help Paul step out from behind the mission and get his work fully funded, understood, and seen?
Let’s meet Paul Lachelier.

Before the Fairy BOSSmother
Before coming on the show, Paul positioned “Learning Life” as the main character, while he stayed firmly behind the scenes. As the founder of this educational non-profit rooted in cultural diplomacy, soft power, and global understanding, his mission matters deeply. The problem is, the people who should be paying attention aren’t hearing it.
His language was thoughtful, academic, and layered, but it was aimed broadly at “civil society” instead of the investors, institutions, and funders who actually move capital.
Paul’s lived experience, his French-American identity, his proximity to power in Washington, D.C., and his personal authority were nowhere to be seen.
The result? Important work without a clear entry point and no obvious reason for decision-makers to lean in… until now!
During the show
During our conversation, I stripped the problem back to something uncomfortable but necessary.
Paul wasn’t unclear because his work lacked focus. He was unclear because he was trying to speak to everyone.
We worked through:
• Why civil society doesn’t need convincing, but funders do
• How complexity without hierarchy loses attention
• Why Paul’s identity and perspective are assets, not distractions
• How segmentation allows clarity without oversimplification
The shift happened when Paul realised that visibility isn’t ego, it’s responsibility.
If the work needs funding, the founder needs to be seen.
After the show
By the end of the show, Paul wasn’t questioning the value of his work, he was questioning how he’d been hiding it.
He left with a clearer understanding of:
• Who his real audience is
• Why investors need him, not just the organisation
• How to lead with identity without diluting credibility
• What it means to translate diplomacy into language that unlocks funding
This wasn’t about changing the mission. It was about making it legible to power.
