Sarah Carlon introduced herself to me as “a nature babe, a lover girl… that happens to wield weapons.” It is the sort of sentence that immediately makes you want to know more. Sarah began as a yoga teacher before discovering a modern rendition of an ancient weapon, and that discovery eventually became part of the work she now does with women through strength, movement and yoga.
There was one problem. Sarah could tell me what happened when women experienced her work, yet explaining exactly what she did was much harder. Earlier in our conversation, she spoke passionately about women taking control of their lives and making significant changes, before eventually admitting, “I don’t even know how to explain it. You gotta feel it. You gotta do it.”
That made Sarah particularly interesting to X-Ray.
During her Human Brand X-Ray on The Fairy BOSSmother Show, I began following the language Sarah used when talking about herself. She found labels uncomfortable. Even when I asked her to describe herself rather than her work, she told me I had given quite a task to “a girl that… never really wants to label herself.” The difficulty was visible enough that I wondered whether her struggle to describe the business was connected to something much more personal.
The conversation eventually moved somewhere Sarah hadn’t expected us to go at all. We went back to childhood, to the younger version of Sarah who described having a big personality with nowhere to show it, being bullied about her body and having “nowhere to express how big I felt.”
Later, I asked Sarah the original question again: Who are you, and what do you do?
Her first instinct was still to tell me about the women she serves. When I pushed the clients and the mission aside and asked why Sarah was doing this, the conversation changed.
By the end of the episode, Sarah described the experience as “wild” and admitted she had initially wondered what childhood could possibly have to do with any of this.
Apparently, quite a lot.
