Why Do Entrepreneurs Need a Personal Brand?

In 2023, I recorded an episode of the Fairy BOSSmother Show called “Why Entrepreneurs Need Personal Branding.” At the time, I talked about personal branding as a way for entrepreneurs to communicate who they are, what they stand for and why their work matters.

I still think personal branding matters. But the reason is simpler than I used to make it.

You already have one.

If people encounter you repeatedly—as clients, colleagues, followers, employees, partners or even strangers online—they are already forming an impression of you. They are noticing what you talk about, what you seem to know, how you behave, what you repeat and what they have learned to expect from you.

You don't need to announce that you have a personal brand for any of that to happen.

Personal Branding Is Bigger Than Your Visual Identity

A logo, colour palette, website or beautifully designed Instagram feed can help people recognize a business. But when the thing being remembered is you, people have considerably more evidence to work with.

They hear your language. They notice your behaviour. They remember stories you tell repeatedly. They see what you pay attention to, how you respond under pressure, what you seem confident discussing and what other people say about you.

All of those signals contribute to the picture someone builds of who you are.

People Are Trying to Work Out What to Associate With You

For an entrepreneur, this matters because people often encounter the person alongside the business.

Someone may know your company name and still remember you as the person who explains a complicated subject brilliantly. Or the founder who always talks about a particular problem. Or the person whose perspective they trust. Or the expert whose name comes to mind when somebody asks for a recommendation.

That association is valuable because recognition rarely happens from one perfect introduction. It develops from repeated evidence.

Standing Out Doesn't Require Inventing a Character

This is where personal branding can go wrong. People start asking what version of themselves would be most marketable and accidentally build a character they then have to keep performing.

A more useful question is: what is already distinctive about the way I think, work, communicate and move through the world?

Sometimes the strongest parts of someone's identity are so normal to them that they barely register as noteworthy. Other people may have been noticing them for years.

Your Reputation Exists Outside Your Head

You know your intentions. Everyone else has to work from evidence.

That means there can be a difference between what you believe you communicate and what people actually receive. You may think you're known for one thing while your audience repeatedly associates you with something else. You may have expertise that is obvious once someone works with you but almost invisible beforehand.

That gap matters more than whether your personal brand looks polished.

So Why Do Entrepreneurs Need Personal Branding?

Because being excellent at something does not automatically mean other people understand what makes you excellent.

Personal branding, at its most useful, helps you become more conscious of the evidence surrounding you: what people repeatedly see, what they remember, what they associate with your name and whether that reflects the person and expertise you actually want them to understand.

You don't begin with a blank page.

You begin by looking at what is already there.

What Are People Already Seeing in You?

That question eventually became central to my work. The Human Brand X-Ray is designed to give you an outside read on the patterns, signals, strengths, blind spots and identity gaps that can be difficult to see from inside your own perspective.
